Job Title: Instrumentation Product Support Engineer – Permanent
Salary : up to £25,000 per annum
Location: SPD Development Company Ltd, Bedford, UK
Position Overview:

This role is to take responsibility for ensuring the supply and quality of released product. The Instrumentation Product Support Engineer will be responsible for:

1. Provision of technical expertise with regard to the product design and the design and installation of the manufacturing processes and controls required to achieve the required product quality.
2. Providing technical expertise to manufacturing sites with regard to trouble shooting production issues and maximising production process efficiency
3. Providing technical expertise/support to manufacturing sites with regard to validation requirements for any requested changes to product or production process

The role holder will be involved in the following key areas:

• New Product Development
• Maintenance/Improvement of Product Quality
• Production Support

The Instrumentation Product Support Engineer will achieve this by:

• Coordinating the day to day activities of the Instrumentation Technician.
• Joint responsibility (with discipline lead) for the development of their direct reports.
• Facilitate performance reviews at mid-year and full year intervals
• Agree Development Plans
• Maintenance of Job Descriptions
• Establishing effective working relationships within all areas of SPD and with suppliers, contract manufacturers and third parties.

The role holder will have experience in the following areas:

• Technical/scientific background with experience in medical device development and transfer into manufacturing
• Detailed understanding of manufacturing processes of electronic devices
• Understanding of Medical Device requirements
• Operating in a regulated Quality System environment
• Product/Process validation activity
• Proven 6 Sigma practitioner

Statistician

Position Overview:
To act as a statistical consultant to product research, development, clinical affairs and marketing by providing guidance, analysis and reporting on experimental design, verification & validation, clinical trials and marketing claims.

Performance Objectives
With immediate effect:
• Review protocols and advise on study/trial design and statistical aspects of protocols.
• Provide advice and guidance on effective data collection and utilisation to aid decision making.
• Perform statistical analyses within a framework of good statistical practice to meet the stakeholders’ needs.
• Report the results of these analyses for non-statisticians in both oral and written presentations.
• Act as a statistical consultant to all stakeholders engaged in your allocated assignments and promote awareness and benefits of using sound statistical methodology throughout these activities.
• Apply your understanding of in-vitro consumer diagnostics and the regulatory environment to your decision making on appropriate statistical approaches.

Person Specification
The individual must have:
• A degree in mathematics with statistics, or statistics with a MSc or PhD is Statistics.A post graduate could be consider
• A minimum of 5 years relevant research and development experience in a statistical consultancy role.
• Demonstrated competent use of SAS for statistical analysis, report generation and SAS/Graph and Marcos.
• Previous experience of working within a regulated environment (e.g. FDA, ISO13485)
• An individual with experience of working in the consumer diagnostic field would be an advantage.

Technical Specialist

Position Overview:
To support a number of SPD supply objectives by leading, project managing and applying a proven technical ability and awareness across a mix of initiatives, cost saving and manufacturing optimisation exercises and thereby strengthening capability across the supply chain.  
The role will be focussed on the optimisation of current manufactured product and in providing technical solutions for new product iterations of plastics, foils and printed packaging components, and will work closely with the global manufacturing sites to coordinate this as appropriate. 
The job holder will be required to identify thought-out improvement opportunities on an ongoing basis through their knowledge of manufacturing processes and solutions.

Performance Objectives
To work a number of proposed iterative moulding changes across a range of product. Evaluate the scope and potential for further iterative changes as identified by Product Supply (PS), the Product Support Group (PSG) and Sales & Marketing teams
Work with the Design Team, PSG and R&D Project Teams both in Bedford, UK and R&D2 in Shanghai to deliver optimised plastics solutions on new product offerings and to facilitate secondary packaging proposals whilst establishing feasibility and driving the correct manufacturing solution, such as the implementation for one of our products.

UK Legal Counsel
Salary: £38,000 - £43,000 + company benefits

Position Overview:
This role is a unique opportunity for a junior lawyer seeking in-house experience to become the newest member of the legal and intellectual property team at a growing consumer diagnostics company. Located at a research facility on the outskirts of Bedford, UK, SPD Development Company Limited is the “invention house” of its parent company, SPD Swiss Precision Diagnostics GmbH (SPD) in Geneva. SPD, in turn, is a joint venture company owned 50/50 by the Procter & Gamble and Inverness Medical Innovations groups of companies. Our research interests are in the broad application of innovative technologies for use by the consumer at home. We have a strong focus on women’s health and our goals are in the continuing supply of useful diagnostic products which are sensitive, simple and affordable.

Working with the other members of the legal and IP team, as well as internal clients from all areas of the business, you will draft and negotiate contracts and prepare and deliver training on legal issues. In addition, you will have responsibility for maintenance of SPD’s contracts database.

Performance Objectives
1. Management of SPD’s contracts database
• Take responsibility for the management of SPD’s contracts database, as follows:
i. Identify tasks that need to be undertaken to enable existing contracts to be uploaded into the database.
ii. Prepare and begin to work on a plan for uploading contracts and maintaining the database in shape.
iii. Oversee the execution of contracts and chase up fully executed copies where necessary.
iv. Establish a system for ensuring that newly executed contracts are regularly added to the database and all pertinent details of those contracts properly recorded in the database.

2. Assist with company law, internal control and general
• Work with General Counsel and UK Legal Counsel on maintenance of the corporate records
• Prepare powers of attorney and other types of formal documentation to support SPD’s internal controls and transfer pricing arrangements with its parent companies.
• Assist other members of the legal and IP team with preparation and obtaining signature of documents needed to formalise SPD’s intellectual property rights.
• Work with General Counsel to develop product knowledge and an understanding of advertising, marketing and regulatory matters as they apply to SPD’s products in order to advise on compliance of packaging, promotional and advertising materials.

3. Contract drafting and negotiation
• Drafting and negotiating routine contracts using approved precedents, to include confidentiality agreements, service agreements, distribution agreements, supply agreements, technical (regulatory compliance) agreements.
• Assist with finalisation and execution of all types of contracts.

4. General
• Under supervision of the General Counsel, support litigation efforts in which SPD is involved.
• Manage the legal and IP team Sharepoint site.
• Obtain advice from approved outside legal counsel where necessary.
• Proactively provide a readily accessible service integrated with the business.
• Participate in the development of a compliance culture within SPD.

Person Specifications

In order to achieve the above:

The successful candidate will be a qualified solicitor, barrister or European qualified lawyer. We anticipate that s/he might have up to 2 years’ post qualification experience, but any candidate who believes that s/he may be able to fulfil the role should be encouraged to apply.

The following areas of law will be encountered in this role: company, commercial contracts, intellectual property, medical devices regulations. Experience in at least two of these areas is essential. Previous in-house experience would be an advantage but is not a pre-requisite.

The successful candidate will have a proven track record in drafting and negotiating routine contracts with minimal supervision and be willing to tackle more complex agreements with assistance from more senior colleagues. S/he will have proven ability to work both autonomously and as part of a team, as well as outstanding integrity and excellent attention to detail. In addition, s/he must demonstrate the willingness and ability to establish effective networks and relationships across all levels within the organisation.

The job holder should be receptive to working in a fast-paced, constantly changing work environment that demands s/he step out of his/her comfort zone on a day to day basis. S/he must be able to ‘hit the ground running’, be able to juggle the never-ending demands of a high workload AND be solution focused, motivated by delivery of results and a job well done.

The job holder must be computer literate and have a working knowledge of standard computer applications. Familiarity with Microsoft Sharepoint and experience of working with a document management system would be an advantage.

Willingness to travel regularly to SPD’s head office in Geneva is important.

An ability to speak French to at least ‘A’ level standard is desirable, though not essential.
